Word Repetitions in The Al Quran

Apart from the miraculous characteristics of the Qur'an which we have looked into so far, it also contains what we can term "mathematical miracles." There are many examples of this fascinating Qur'anic aspect. One example of this is the number of repetitions of certain words in the Qur'an. Some related words are surprisingly repeated the same number of times. Below is a list of such words and the number of repetitions in the Qur'an.

The statement of "seven heavens" is repeated seven times. "The creation of the heavens (khalq as-samawat)" is also repeated seven times.

"Day (yawm)" is repeated 365 times in singular form, while its plural and dual forms "days (ayyam and yawmayn)" together are repeated 30 times. The number of repetitions of the word "month" (shahar) is 12.

The number of repetitions of the words "plant" and "tree" is the same: 26

The word "payment or reward" is repeated 117 times, while the expression "forgiveness" (mughfirah), which is one of the basic morals of the Qur'an, is repeated exactly twice that amount, 234 times.

When we count the word "Say," we find it appears 332 times. We arrive at the same figure when we count the phrase "they said."

The number of times the words, "world" (dunya) and "hereafter" (akhira) are repeated is also the same: 115

The word "satan" (shaitan) is used in the Qur'an 88 times, as is the word "angels" (malaika).

The word faith (iman) (without genitive) is repeated 25 times throughout the Qur'an as is also the word infidelity (kufr).

The words "paradise" and "hell" are each repeated 77 times.

The word "zakah" is repeated in the Qur'an 32 times and the number of repetitions of the word "blessing" (barakah) is also 32.

The expression "the righteous" (al-abraar) is used 6 times but "the wicked" (al-fujjaar) is used half as much, i.e., 3 times.

The number of times the words "Summer-hot" and "winter-cold" are repeated is the same: 5.

The words "wine" (khamr) and "intoxication" (saqara) are repeated in the Qur'an the same number of times: 6

The number of appearances of the words "mind" and "light" is the same: 49.

The words "tongue" and "sermon" are both repeated 25 times.

The words "benefit" and "corrupt" both appear 50 times.

"Reward" (ajr) and "action" (fail) are both repeated 107 times.

"Love" (al-mahabbah) and "obedience" (al-ta'ah) also appear the same number of times: 83

The words "refuge" (maseer) and "for ever" (abadan) appear the same number of times in the Qur'an: 28.

The words "disaster" (al-musibah) and "thanks" (al-shukr) appear the same number of times in the Qur'an: 75.

"Sun" (shams) and "light" (nur) both appear 33 times in the Qur'an.

* In counting the word "light" only the simple forms of the word were included.

The number of appearances of "right guidance" (al-huda) and "mercy" (al-rahma) is the same: 79

The words "trouble" and "peace" are both repeated 13 times in the Qur'an.

The words "man" and "woman" are also employed equally: 23 times.
Will they not ponder the Qur’an? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found many inconsistencies in it.
(Qur’an, 4:82)

The number of times the words "man" and "woman" are repeated in the Qur'an, 23, is at the same time that of the chromosomes from the egg and sperm in the formation of the human embryo. The total number of human chromosomes is 46; 23 each from the mother and father.

"Treachery" (khiyanah) is repeated 16 times, while the number of repetitions of the word "foul" (khabith) is 16.

"Human being" is used 65 times: the sum of the number of references to the stages of man's creation is the same: i.e.

Human being 65

Soil (turab) 17

Drop of Sperm (nutfah) 12

Embryo ('alaq) 6

A half formed lump of flesh (mudghah) 3

Bone ('idham) 15

Flesh (lahm) 12

TOTAL 65

The word "salawat" appear five times in the Qur'an, and Allah has commanded man to perform the prayer (salat) five times a day.

The word "land" appears 13 times in the Qur'an and the word "sea" 32 times, giving a total of 45 references. If we divide that number by that of the number of references to the land we arrive at the figure 28.888888888889%. The number of total references to land and sea, 45, divided by the number of references to the sea in the Qur'an, 32, is 71.111111111111%. Extraordinarily, these figures represent the exact proportions of land and sea on the Earth today.238

Iron - QS Al Hadiid : 25

"وأنزلنا الحديد فيه بأس شديد ومنافع للناس"

آية 25

And we sent down iron, wherein is

great might and many uses for men

Chapter 56 verse 25

This verse extraordinarily reveals the scientific fact that iron is not like other minerals, inherent in our earth: but it is “sent down” from outer space just for our benefit.

Scientifically, it is impossible that iron could have been developed on earth for it needs a very high energy that much exceeds the energy on earth. No one knew about this ultra modern scientific fact except in the 20th century. So, when the Holy Qur’an says that iron is “sent down” is another palpable proof that the Holy Qur’an is but the true inspiration from the Almighty.

Dr. M. Abd El Ghafour Hasan[96] enriches the interpretation of the “great might” of iron. He says that iron is not a power producer, but it is a power consumer, so when it appears in the core of a big star , it is considered as a sign that its reserved nuclear energy is about to cease; which is a sign of the beginning of the doomed end of the big star.

We may add that the “great might” of iron as it is used in killing man in wars, it is also a direct sign of stars’ death.

The Splitting Asunder of "The Heavens and The Earth"

Another verse about the creation of the heavens is as follows:

Do those who disbelieve not see that the heavens and the earth were sewn together and then We unstitched them and that We made from water every living thing? So will they not believe? (Qur'an, 21:30)

The word "ratq" translated as "sewn to" means "mixed in each, blended" in the Arabic vernacular. It is used to refer to two different substances that make up a whole. The phrase "we unstitched" is the verb "fataqa" in Arabic and implies that something comes into being by tearing apart or destroying the structure of things that are sewn to one another. The sprouting of a seed from the soil is one of the actions to which this verb is applied.

Let us take a look at the verse again. In the verse, sky and earth are at first subject to the status of "ratq." They are separated (fataqa) with one coming out of the other. Intriguingly, when we think about the first moments of the Big Bang, we see that the entire matter of the universe collected at one single point. In other words, everything-including "the heavens and earth" which were not created yet-were in an interwoven and inseparable condition. Then, this point exploded violently, causing its matter to disunite.

Creation From Hot Smoke

Scientists today are able to observe the formation of stars from a hot gas cloud. Formation from a warm mass of gas also applies to the creation of the universe. The creation of the universe as described in the Qur'an confirms this scientific discovery in the following verse:

He placed firmly embedded mountains on it, towering over it, and blessed it and measured out its nourishment in it, laid out for those who seek it-all in four days. Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come willingly or unwillingly." They both said, "We come willingly." (Qur'an, 41:10-11)

The Arabic word for "smoke" in the above verse is "dukhanun," which describes the hot, cosmic smoke in question. This word in the Qur'an, in pinpoint fashion, describes this smoke very accurately for it is a warm body of gas containing mobile particles connected to solid substances. Here, the Qur'an has employed the most appropriate word from the Arabic language for describing the appearance of this phase of the universe. Let us note that only in the 20th century have scientists discovered that the universe emerged from a hot gas in the form of smoke. 5

The fact that such information about the creation of the universe is given in the Qur'an is nothing short of a miracle of the Qur'an.

The Miraculous use of Numbers in the Holy Qur'an

The miraculous nature of the use of numbers in the Holy Qur'an is capable of convincing any stubborn nature, especially if we, bear in mind that the Holy Qur’an was inspired in a period of over twenty years – Hence, the most calculating mind could not have kept this balance over such a long period. Therefore, it must nave come from God the All- Knowing the All- Merciful.

This heavenly balance could not be a mere coincidence, therefore we can say that this phenomenon is but one of God's great signs.

Abd El Razzak Nofal covered this Holy sign in three volumes "the Miraculous use of Numbers in the Holy Qur'an". He makes it clear that certain words are equally mentioned, in spite of the fact that they are widely spread in the various chapters of the Holy Qur’an. I will give you as a specimen a limited number of them:

1) This "world" and "the other world" are equally mentioned – 115 times- in spite of the fact that in many cases they are not mentioned in the same chapter.

2) "Angels" and "devils" are equally mentioned 68 times, while their derivatives are also equally mentioned 20 times each, this makes a total of 88 times.

3) Human "life" and "death and their derivatives are equally mentioned 145 times each.

4) "Sight" and "insight" each is mentioned 148 times, which is equal to the same number of times that the "heart" is mentioned.

5) "Good deeds" and "evil deeds" with their derivatives are equally mentioned 167 times each.

6) "Hell" and "punishment" are equally mentioned 26 times each.

7) "Knowledge" and "learning" with their derivatives are equally mentioned 811 times, which is the same number that the word "faith" and its derivatives are each mentioned. This fact shows to what extent Islam values knowledge and learning, which are equal to "faith".

8) What is really amazing is that the "Merciful" is mentioned 57 times, while the "Compassionate" is mentioned 114 times which is the number of chapters of the Holy Qur’an.

9) It is very strange that in the Holy Qur'an, "inspiration", "Islam", and "resurrection" with their derivatives are mentioned – 70 times each-

10) "Magic" and "infatuation" are each mentioned 60 times; as if God wants to attract our attention to the similarity of the effect of both.

11) "Fire" and its derivatives and "heathen" are each mentioned 154 times.

12) "Fasting" and "Patience" are mentioned in the Holy Qur'an in equal numbers.

13) "Brain" and "light" are equally mentioned 49 times each.

14) "Love" and "obedience" with all their derivatives are mentioned 83 times each.

15) "Generosity" and "reward" are mentioned 20 times each.

16) "Temptation" and "sin" are both mentioned 22 times each.

17) "Forgiveness" and its derivatives are mentioned 234 times which is double the number of times that the word "Punishment" with all its derivatives is mentioned. This shows God's bounty and compassion towards His creatures.

18) The word "month" is mentioned 12 times, while the word "day" is mentioned 365 times!!!

19) One of the most significant signs in the Holy Qur’an is the use of numbers in the chapter "The cave", where God says:

And they tarried in the cave three hundred years,

and to that they added nine more.

Dr. El Fandy comments on this verse saying:

This verse miraculously transfers 300 solar years exactly to 309 lunar years!!!

In the light of the recent careful astronomical measurements and exact estimates, it became evident that:

1)The average duration of the lunar months 29.550329 days.

2)One solar year equals 365.2411 days, so that the total number of days in 300 solar years is

300 x 365.2422 =109572.66 days, and the total number of days in 309 lunar years is

12 x 309 x 29.550329 = 109572.66 days.[93]

This balance and numerical co. ordination could not have occurred by chance, but they must have been coordinated by the Great Creator; and they surely have a meaning or certain significances, some of which we have pointed out.

What kind of human power, or what electronic mind could have placed such equal numbers of words in similar and contradictory themes, and then spread them out in the different verses of the Holy Qur'an, and in the most perfect way?

Perfect balance and minute co-ordination is what characterizes all the creation of God in the universe and in Man, the Holy Qur'an reflects this extremely accurate system as if God wants to tell us: these are My words and that is my creation.

Nobody could deny this miraculous phenomenon, because it deals with numbers and numbers always have one meaning i.e. the whole truth. It is a clear evidence of the truthfulness of what the illiterate prophet Mohammed had said, and that the Holy Qur'an is but the true inspiration from God.

The End of The Universe and The Big Crunch

The Big Crunch theory proposes that the universe, that began expanding with the Big Bang, will collapse in on itself with increasing speed. According to the theory, this collapse of the universe will continue until the universe has lost all its mass and turned into a single point of infinite density.

As we have stated above, the creation of the universe began with a huge explosion. From this point, the universe has been expanding ever since. Scientists say that when the mass of the universe has reached a sufficient level, this expansion will come to an end because of gravity, causing the universe to collapse in on itself. 3

It is also believed that the contracting universe will end in a fierce heat and contraction known as the "Big Crunch." This would lead to the end of all forms of life as we know them. Renata Kallosh and Andrei Linde, professors of physics from Stanford University, made the following statements on the subject:

The universe may be doomed to collapse and disappear. Everything we see now, and at a much larger distance that we cannot see, will collapse into a point smaller than a proton. Locally, it will be the same as if you were inside a black hole... We have found that some of the best attempts to describe dark energy predict that it will gradually become negative, which will cause the universe to become unstable, then collapse... Physicists have known that dark energy could become negative and the universe could collapse sometime in the very distant future... but now we see that we might be, not in the beginning, but in the middle of the life cycle of our universe. 4

This is how this scientific hypothesis of the Big Crunch is indicated in the Qur'an:

That Day We will fold up heaven like folding up the pages of a book. As We originated the first creation so We will regenerate it. It is a promise binding on Us. That is what We will do. (Qur'an, 21:104)

In another verse, this state of the heavens is described thus:

They do not measure Allah with His true measure. The whole earth will be a mere handful for Him on the Day of Rising the heavens folded up in His right hand. Glory be to Him! He is exalted above the partners they ascribe! (Qur'an, 39:67)

According to the Big Crunch theory, the universe will begin to collapse slowly and will then increasingly pick up speed. At the end of the process the universe will have infinite density and be infinitely hot and small. This scientific theory runs parallel to the Qur'anic explanation of this particular scientific concept. (Allah knows best)

The Expansion of The Universe

In the Qur'an, which was revealed fourteen centuries ago at a time when the science of astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in the following terms:

And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. (Qur'an, 51:47)

The word "heaven," as stated in the verse above, is used in various places in the Qur'an. It is referring to space and the wider universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning, stating that the universe "expands." The Arabic word "moosiaaoona" in the term "inna lamoosiaaoona," translated into English as "it is We Who are steadily expanding it", comes from the verb "evsea," meaning "to expand." The prefix "la" emphasises the following name or title and adds a sense of "to a great extent." This expression therefore means "We expand the sky or the universe to a great extent." This is the very conclusion that science has reached today. 1

Georges Lemaitre

Until the dawn of the 20th century, the only view prevailing in the world of science was that "the universe has a constant nature and it has existed since infinite time." However, modern research, observations, and calculations carried out by means of modern technology have revealed that the universe in fact had a beginning and that it constantly "expands."

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding.

From the moment of the Big Bang, the universe has been constantly expanding at a great speed. Scientists compare the expanding universe to the surface of a balloon that is inflated.

This notion was confirmed by the use of observational data in 1929. While observing the sky with a telescope, Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. This discovery is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of astronomy. During these observations, Hubble established that the stars emit a light that turns redder according to their distance. That is because according to the known laws of physics, light heading towards a point of observation turns violet, and light moving away from that point assumes a more reddish hue. During his observations, Hubble noted a tendency towards the colour red in the light emitted by stars. In short, the stars were moving further and further away, all the time. The stars and galaxies were not only moving away from us, but also from each other. A universe where everything constantly moves away from everything else implied a constantly expanding universe. The observations carried out in the following years verified that the universe is constantly expanding.

In order to gain a clearer understanding of this, let us imagine the universe to be the surface of a balloon being inflated. In the same way that the more the balloon is inflated, the further away the points on its surface move from one another, celestial bodies also move away from one another as the universe expands. This was theoretically discovered by Albert Einstein, regarded as one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century. However, in order to avoid violating the "static universe model" that was generally accepted at that time, Einstein laid that discovery aside. He would later describe this as the greatest blunder of his life. 2

This fact was explained in the Qur'an in a time when telescopes and similar technological advancements were not even close to being invented. This is because the Qur'an is the Word of Allah: the Creator and Ruler of the entire universe.
